Praying isn't just for Christians and Buddhists! We pagans will pray, too. I usually focus on what I want/need and say
'Dear Creator. I'm in need (or I am wanting) ___________ for _________ reasons. Could you help me find a solution?'
If I'm in a particularly tough spot, I will add 'I can't do this myself'. I find I have a high success rate with my prayers, in part because I am honest with myself in what I want done and I usually know what I can do myself. Praying isn't just blindly mouthing off some random words. You add intent and energy into the mix.
There's several types of Prayer. Generally, prayer can be anything from a quick thank you to the Gods to a scream for help. Besides my 'help me' prayer mentioned above, I have grace and bed time Prayers. I always thank the animals I am eating, and the plants, then the people who made/processed the food. A sample prayer I've used is a bastardized version originally written by Scott Cunningham. My version goes as so:
'From the land to the field
To the field to the farmer
From farmer to the table
I thank all that have provided this _______ today.'
The bed time prayer I have runs along the lines of :
'Dear Goddess and God. Please protect me in my sleep. Please prevent bad things from happening/visiting me. In your names old ones, Blessed Be.'
Part of my practice consists of greeting the moon, sun and stars/sky according to the Egyptian Pantheon. My greeting very informal and is literally this:
'Good morning/evening Thoth (The moon).
Good morning Isis (The daytime sky)
Good evening Osiris (The nighttime sky)
Good day Ra (The sun)'
I will greet the sky and Moon out of habit. All my greeting is, is one or two lines.
Because I have so many pets, death happens. Especially when you have rats, hamsters, mice and other critters that are short lived. My Prayer to them is a little more complex, as I often have conversations with them (One of the perks of talking to the spirit realm). My Prayer to them roughly goes like so:
'I'm so sorry ___________ (name of pet or if it's a mouse caught in a trap, just mousy) that you died. Thank you for your times with me. You are free to join the others in my home or you may go in peace.'
