Theres some debate in the magical community as to what a familiar is. Some say they're pets who help during ritual or during magic. Others say that's wrong because familiars were seen as a sign of the devil in olden times and were not based on fact. Yet others say they're only spiritual creatures that help on the astral. Personally I see truth in all three of these.
Which brings to the conversation my 16 year old cockatiel, Mindwipe. She's the critter pictured at the top of my web site. Ever since I've had her, I've known she's been 'different'. She serves as a messenger for me and I believe she's helping me understand birds better on a spiritual level. She's cranky, going bald and looks rather beat up compared to her mate, Redshift. She helped me understand cockatiel breeding, one of my passions, and she's helped me bring in many other birds over the years, from Moonie (aka Moonbase One, my first Conure) to my current crop of birds. She taught many chicks how to eat adult food and told me, in no uncertain terms, that she was not going to give me babies any more when she turned 10.
I've used her feathers in magic, her discarded eggs in spells and brought her to rituals. She's too old these days to lay eggs or come to ritual, especially at Yule, but she helps me in her own ways.
